About SONJA SCHULZ

Sonja Schulz is a professional dancer and aerialist, originally from the Chicago area. After competing and training in gymnastics for several years, she transitioned into dancing at Cimino Dance Studio and in her high school's fine arts program, Orchesis, under the direction of Lisette Rodriguez. Within Orchesis, Sonja was able to train in a variety of styles, choreograph, research, and perform. Orchesis opened up different training paths for Sonja including training at Aerial Dance Chicago and Faubourg Theatre and led her to pursue dance at the University of Iowa in 2015.

While at the University of Iowa, Sonja studied with and performed works by Geroge de la Pena, Jessica Anthony, Kristin Marrs, Melinda Jean Myers, Eloy Barragan, Armando Duarte, Christopher-Rasheem McMillan, Rebekah Kowal, and several graduate students. In May of 2019, she graduated with her BFA in Dance, BA in Economics, and 200-Hour Yoga Teaching Certification. Additional training experience includes DanceWorks Chicago Dance 360 Intensive, the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, the Oklahoma City Ballet Summer Intensive, Joffrey Summer Dance Lab, and Threads Dance Project Summer Residency Intensive.

Sonja has now been in the Kansas City area since July 2019 and performs with KC Contemporary Dance and Quixotic. She teaches at local dance studios, is a certified NASM personal trainer, barre fitness certified and teaches yoga.

Sonja is excited to be working with the dancers at MelRoe's School of Dance!
